transference neurosis

Early in the develop of the clinical techniques of psychoanalysis, Freud noticed that his patiences often projected their feelings about important people in their lives, usually family members, onto him. This "transfer" of patients' emotional reactions to others onto the analyst is known as transference neurosis. In the psychoanalytic session, everything the patient says, including statements that reveal the transference neurosis, become part of the materials for analysis. Although it is a neurotic response to the experience of analysis, the tranference can be used to explore aspects of patients' relationships and psychological processes.
