Distinguished Visiting Writer ACHY OBEJAS

Achy Obejas joined the English Department for Fall 2005 as the Distinguished Writer in Residence. This talented journalist, poet, translator, and fiction writer is the author of Days of Awe, a novel about the tensions between private and public identities set in the Jewish community in Cuba. Her other books include the novel Memory Mambo and the short story collection We Came All the Way From Cuba So You Could Dress Like This? Her poetry and stories have appeared in numerous journals and anthologies.

Citizens' Chair Albert Wendt
Since joining the UH English Department in the fall of 2004 as Citizens' Chair, Professor Albert Wendt has made contributions that have been profound and far-reaching. From Samoa, before coming to Hawai'i, Professor Wendt also has lived in Fiji and New Zealand/ Aotearoa. Known as the Godfather of Pacific literature, Professor Wendt is a novelist, poet, essayist, anthologist, visual artist, dramatist, and champion of indigenous work across the Pacific.

Craig Howes Wins Service Award
Professor Craig Howes received the 2005 Hung Wo and Elizabeth Lau Ching Foundation Award for Faculty Services to the Community. This award recognizes Craig for the truly extraordinary variety of contributions he has made to Hawai‘i communities and the profound way in which he has committed himself since the 1980s to ensuring that his academic interests and skills are of use to the wider Hawai‘i community.

I am delighted that the English Department is launching Trade Winds. This electronic newsletter seeks to connect alumni and supporters of the Department with our faculty and current students; to spread the news about departmental events, faculty, and students; and to give our alumni an opportunity to showcase their accomplishments. I’ve been chairing the Department since 2001 and am very proud of it --I think you’ll see why.
