Rhetoric Society of America Student Chapter at the University of Hawai`i Mānoa

RSA Events: Fall 2008

RSA meets for a general meeting every first Wednesday of each month (Oct. 1, Nov. 5, Dec. 3) from 5 – 6pm at the Manoa Gardens outside patio.

October 28 (Tues.) 3 – 5pm: RSA is sponsoring an advanced seminar with Dr. Nedra Reynolds, from the University of Rhode Island. Dr. Reynolds will lead a discussion on the intersections of spatial theory, rhetoric, and composition pedagogy. Readings will be distributed at the Oct. 1 meeting and will be available in KUY 402 thereafter. All graduate students and faculty are welcome to attend.

October 30 (Thurs.) 3 – 5pm: Dr. Reynolds will also give a talk entitled,
" Geographies of Difference: Inhabiting Places and Encountering Difference" as part of the English Dept. Colloquium in KUY 410.

November 19 (Wed.) 5 – 6:30 pm: “Mapping the Rhetorical Terrain of Publics Spheres and Networked Publics” – A presentation by RSA member Jolivette Mecenas. KUY 410.

December: End of the semester party: Date and place TBA.

RSA members and Composition and Rhetoric faculty will also present this semester as part of the English Dept. Colloquium on Thursdays from 3 – 5pm in KUY 410:

October 9:  "Rethinking the Nation: Singapore's National Anthem, the EU's migration control, and Germany's TurkHop." Presented by Carmen Nolte, Cheryl Naruse, and Lorenzo Rinelli.

December 4: "Assessing Ourselves: Results and Findings from Our Foundations in Writing Assessment Measure"       Presented by Holly Bruland, Erica Clayton, Jim Henry.

Also of interest, the Graduate Program Committee (GPC) will hold the following
workshops at 3:30 on Monday afternoons:

November 29: Area Exams (the whole GPC will participate)

     This workshop will cover all aspects of the Area Examinations.
     It would be useful for those considering a Ph.D. program, and for
     all those in the Ph.D. program who have not finished the exams.

October 13: Jobs Workshop (Erica Clayton, Cindy Ward, Paul Lyons)

     This workshop will be principally concerned with preparing
     to apply for academic/teaching jobs.

October 20: Academic Publishing Workshop

October 27: Applying to Graduate School (Cheryl Naruse, Paul Lyons, John Zuern)

     This meeting will be partly for undergraduates thinking about
     applying to M.A. programs, and partly about applying for Ph.D.
     programs.
