The Society of English Graduate Students (SEGS) is an organization
that aims to provide opportunities for students to get to know each
other beyond the confines of the classroom. We like to talk about
books and papers and all that, but sometimes we like to be hurling
a bowling ball or eating a hot dog at the same time. If you, too,
enjoy these things–or even if you don’t but you just want
to make some new friends–please get involved with SEGS. We would
love to hear from you.
This semester, we at SEGS have tried to rally the
forces of fun, but sadly the forces of nature have been working
against us. Many apologies for the rainy-day cancellation of our
Spring Break Kick-Off Barbeque. The good news is that it seems to
be drying out, so stay tuned for announcements of a re-scheduled,
re-named Yay! School Is Almost Over! Barbeque. Our esteemed colleague
Cherry Fu has issued a volleyball challenge, so I hope you will
all turn out and join us (because there’s no way I’m
going to win if you don’t).
Thanks to all the folks who showed up for our beginning-of-the-term
Bowling Night. I’ll never again be able to listen to the Dirty
Dancing soundtrack without getting sentimental about Lane 18. You
guys are like the wind!
Most of all, I want to say…watch out! Because
the semester isn’t over yet and I’m not relinquishing
SEGS’s fun without a fight. There are still lots of activities
in store for you in the next month, including a group hike, our
BBQ, and a grand finale kiss-and-cry beerfest. So don’t go
thinking that you’ll be writing term papers every weekend,
my friends. I can’t allow such madness.
Finally, I would like to extend a warm welcome to
all the new admits who will be joining us next semester. We look
forward to toasting your arrival. And if you hear any rumors about
initiation rituals involving karaoke and/or mustard…don’t
worry. The administration is really starting to crack down on that
sort of thing.
Sincerely,
Sarah Pardes
