| The
Major in English
The English major consists of 33 upper-division
credits; all major courses must be passed with a grade of C or better--a
grade of C- does not count toward the major. On the reverse you
will find the requirements for the major. English offers numerous
intriguing and challenging ways through its major: you may choose
to emphasize English or American literary history, creative writing,
Pacific literature, cultural studies, Asian American literature,
composition and rhetoric, and so on. Its your choice!
As an English major, you will be assigned a faculty advisor with
whom you will consult to develop a coherent program to satisfy your
specific interests and needs, as well as the Department's requirements.
The Director of Undergraduate Studies will assign you to an appropriate
advisor during your initial appointment; call 956-3048 or go to
Kuykendall 417 to schedule the appointment. You may meet with your
advisor any time during the semester, but please understand that
advising for Fall and Spring semesters is mandatory--if you do not
see your advisor, an annoying hold will be placed on your MyUHPortal
registration. Your advisor has a great deal of discretionary authority
and can waive a particular requirement if you demonstrate that you
have already met the purpose of the requirement or that other courses
will meet it adequately. Students in the Honors Program routinely
substitute Honors courses for several of the required major core
courses.
As a new major, you should plan to see your advisor soon; you should also
schedule a JUMP (Junior Matriculation and Planning) session at Keller
Hall 305 to review your over-all degree progress. If you are considering
elementary or high school teaching as a career, you should contact the
College of Education for information on its Post-Baccalaureate Certificate
in Secondary Education (PBCSE) program, which offers English majors the
opportunity to become certified to teach in D.O.E. schools. You should
contact Education early in your major career to ensure that you are taking
appropriate courses for both programs; go to Educations Student
Academic Services Office, Wist Annex 2, Room 126 (956-7849) for further
information.
The Department has an active Honors
Program; it also participates every semester in Study Abroad's
London Semester, and we offer various types of internships in your
senior year. See the Director of Undergraduate Studies in Kuykendall
512 for more information on these programs.
The Department publishes specific descriptions of almost all of its 300
& 400-level courses every Fall and Spring. These are available in
Kuykendall 402 or outside 429 about the time that the Schedule of Classes
comes out; they are also accessible at the Department's web site, which
you are encouraged to check frequently:
