I was born in New York City, raised partly there
and in Barranquilla, Colombia. I came to the University of Hawaii
at Manoa in 1978. I teach in and write about two rather disparate
fields--modern drama and Victorian literature. My Victorian projects
center on the rediscovery of the work of Margaret Oliphant, who
was a popular novelist in her day (92 novels) and reputed to be
Queen Victoria's favorite, but whose work has been largely overlooked
in the twentieth century. In the field of modern drama, I am the
author of a new book on the English playwright Alan Bennett entitled
Alan Bennett: A Critical Introduction (Routledge, 2001).
I currently teach part-time in the English department because I
also serve as the Interim Dean of the College of Languages, Linguistics
and Literature.
