I came to the University of Hawai`i in 1970. As a specialist in Restoration and Eighteenth-Century literature, I've written mostly on Dryden, often in an old historicist manner. I edited a selection of historical materials related to Absalom and Achitophel. Currently I'm working on a life of Dryden's contemporary, Roger North, an early biographer, essayist, and Tory historian of the reign of Charles II. As a regular teacher of Shakespeare, I've become interested in studying the adaptations of his plays, expecially those done in the Restoration, as well as nineteenth-century operas and modern films. I've studied the relationship between literature and both the visual arts and music, exploring the possible application of ideas about the mannerist and baroque styles to literary forms.
