Writers
The English Department's Fall Festival of Writers is
a biennual event. Information about the next Festival
of Writers will be posted on this page in August, 2009.
2007 Fall Festival of Writers
- WRITE HARD,
PLAY HARDER: Playwriting Across
the
Pacific, October 3-5, featuring
playwriting and the following playwrights: Alani Apio, Lee Cataluna,
Briar
Grace-Smith, Vicky
Nalani Kneubuhl, Darrell Lum, Edward Sakamoto, Albert Wendt and
Y. York; co-sponsored with Kumu Kahua Theatre.
Panel topics include "The Writing Life: Why Write Plays?",
and "Page to Stage: Elements of Playwriting".
Performances
at Kumu Kahua Theater cover "A Salute to the Life and Work of Playwright John
Kneubuhl", "Excerpts from the Work of Participating
Playwrights", and "Previews from the Work of Emerging Playwrights".

2005
Fall Festival of Writers - THIRTY
YEARS AFTER:
LITERATURE AND FILM OF THE VIETNAM WAR features
writers and speakers, panel discussions, and a series of films, “Re-Viewing
Vietnam: Film Representations of the Vietnam War”, taking place at
the Honolulu Academy of Arts. Notable guests include Wayne
Karlin, Andrew Lam, Tim O'Brien.
2004
Fall Festival of Writers - MOVING ISLANDS celebrates the writers who have emerged from
Oceania and the Caribbean. We hope to build new relationships, and
explore scholarly and creative synergies between two island literatures.
Generous support comes from The Center for Pacific Island Studies,
the Distinguished Lecture Series, the UH Diversity and Lecture Fund,
Juniroa Productions, the East-West Center, Islands of Globalization
Project, the College of Languages, Linguistics, and Literature-UHM,
and the Department of English-UHM.

- VISIONS OF (DIS)LOCATION: NATIVE, IMMIGRANT, SETTLER,
linked with the Bamboo Ridge Press launch of He
Leo Hou, A New Voice, supported in part by the University
of Hawai'i Department of Languages and Literatures of Europe and
the Americas, and funded in part by the University of Hawai'i Endowment
for the Humanities.
