Center for English Studies Technology

Through research projects and community service learning initiatives, the Center for English Studies Technology (CEST) investigates the role of advanced information technology in the fields of writing, literature, and cultural studies.

Our primary focus is on helping low-income communities in Honolulu develop sustainable, self-determined computing resources and technology-related educational programs. The classes affiliated with CEST projects are designed to give students valuable skills in writing and information design while developing their awareness of the complex relationships among public discourse, public policy, and access to information technology.

CEST News

CEST Director John Zuern is part of a team of UH system faculty that has received a grant from WorldCom, Campus Compact, and Brown University to continue technology-based service-learning projects in low-income communities. Robert Franco and Judi Kirkpatrick (KCC), Mimi Nakano (LCC) and John Zuern are directing the Making a Civic Investment project, Community, Technology, and Lifelong Learning, which has been funded at $80,000 for two years with the possibility of renewal for another three years. Their community partner locations are Kuhio Park Terrace and Kuhio Homes in Kalihi, Palolo Valley Homes in Palolo, and the communities of the Wai'anae Coast. They are currently recruiting students to serve as technology mentors to designated Community Technology Leaders in each of these communitites.

John is coordinating students for the Kuhio Park Terrace and Kuhio Homes site.
